Dr Alexandra Sexton
Alexandra Sexton is a Leverhulme Research Fellow in Geography at the University of Sheffield. She has been researching the emerging industry of alternative proteins since 2012, and has built an international reputation as a leader in both academic and public debates about what these food innovations mean for the future of food and society.
Alexandra received her doctorate in Human Geography from King’s College London in 2017, and then became a Postdoctoral Research Associate on the Wellcome Trust-funded project ‘Livestock, Environment and People’ at the University of Oxford, where she led the team’s research on the emergence of alternative proteins as a popular solution to many contemporary global challenges, from climate change to world hunger.
Alexandra has advised the UK Government, the World Economic Forum and members of the European Parliament, and has published widely on the topic of alternative proteins in academic journals and policy documents. She is also a regular contributor to mainstream UK and international media, including on BBC Radio 4’s Food Programme, the BBC World Service, and PBS News Hour in the US. She has been a keynote speaker and panellist at academic conferences, think tanks and public festivals, including the EAT Stockholm Food Forum, Chatham House and the Hay Festival. She is also a Council Member for the Food Ethics Council in London, and a co-founder of Cultivate, the first UK non-profit group to support informed dialogue about cellular agriculture.
